Role Allocation and Casting

Roles and Casting:

Actors: Ash Thompson

We only need two actors to be in the opening scene, as we need the main character and their doppelganger. The doppelganger’s face won’t be shown, as they will only be filmed from behind them to keep an element of mystery to who the character is. Ashley Thompson will be the actor for the main character and Will Taylor will be the doppelganger. The actor is the part of the film that portrays the characters and their actions and emotions.

Director: Sammy Bowles

The director is the person in the filming process that decides the creative and dramatic aspects of the film. Will Taylor will be the director, who will decide the positioning of the actor(s) and how they should act in the scene.

Producer: Will Taylor

The producer is the person who overlooks the making of the film on both the creative side and the finance side. They can be employed by a production company or independently. The producer is the one who prepares, supervises and helps get finances for the film.

Camera Operator: Sammy Bowles

The camera operator is the person who physically films the film. They use a camera script to know which camera and type of shot to use at which time. They will be able to practice this in rehearsals but will be prompted by the director when it comes to filming. Samantha Bowles will be the camera operator.

Editor: Sammy Bowles, Will Taylor and Ash Thompson

The editor is responsible for making the original shots into the film. They order the shots in the right order and cut recordings to make shots such as match on action shots and shots involving conversation. The editor also adds in any sound effects, dialogue or special effects into the final product and works closely with the director to get the right result.

Sound Technician: Ash Thompson

The sound technician is responsible for everything to do with sound, from recording sound to maintaining sound equipment. They see what type of sound is needed and performs the appropriate actions to get the right sound.

Make-Up Artist: Sammy Bowles

The make-up artist is the one who does make-up and hair for a scene. They apply make-up for scene such as fight scene with face blood and mud or for a horror scene with scary make-up.

Runner: Will Taylor

The runner is the one who performs the basic jobs around the production. This includes refreshment making, transporting scripts and passing on messages, looking after guests and getting the set ready for shooting.

Programme Researcher: Sammy Bowles

The programme researcher supports the producer and production team. Part of the job includes finding contacts and contributors, collecting, verifying and preparing information and contributing ideas. They are responsible for organizing, planning and researching every aspect of the film.

Storyline and Pitch

Dead Ringer

The film opens with an establishing shot of a house, it looks regular with nothing out of the ordinary (Sammy’s), the shot then fades to black with no music. The house then moves to a closer establishing shot, it then moves to a first person shot which walks towards the window, watching the main character doing his normal routine. (Background noise: dog-barking/cars etc.)

The main character is quite OCD, who walks around his house after just coming home from work, he will be straightening towels in the bathroom/tidying up/fixing things. He will be taking off his jacket and hanging it up, making sure it is perfectly straight and on the door correctly. He will be making himself a drink (tea?) in a particular way, with the teabags in a certain position and the cup straight and in line etc. Throughout this there will be several first person shots of the camera hiding behind objects like a sofa etc. it will be then watching character from hidden positions, whilst the main character is checking his phone, in which there will be shots of text messages between him and an unknown number, getting increasingly creepy with each message.

1.      First shot in house when you walk through the door will be a high angle, that looks like a CCTV camera, this is to show that he is being watched.

2.      Second shot is a medium close up, this will show that he feels he is being watched and someone is after him.

3.      Third shot high angle as he walks into the kitchen, this is to show he is still being watched. These three shot are match on action shots.

4.      Next shot a medium shot of him straightening things out.

5.      Then goes into an extreme close up of him moving objects.

6.      Then low angles close up of his face from the angle of objects.

7.      Medium close up of radio. Radio turns on and he looks at it

8.      High angle shot as he hangs up coats and straightening them out.

9.      Medium close up with tracing shot as he get closer to the toaster.

10.  Extreme close up of the toaster.

11.   A low angle shot from the toasters point of view.

12.  Medium close up of the character, turns to look at the radio because he is scared.

13.  Camera tracks the character as he runs to the radio.

14.  Character leads into the shot  (medium close up)

15.  Extreme close up of the radio as he turns it off.

16.  Medium shot and the character looks at the text

17.  First person shot moves towards the character

18.  Character moves into the living room
Radio turns on mysteriously. Camera will be positioned behind character as a medium close-up from shoulders up. Character will turn around towards the radio with a confused look.
The main character will look very smart and presentable, with the doppelganger looking the complete opposite, scruffy and messy.

Film Titles and Logo

Seven:
The opening to 'Seven' cuts from various shots of someone putting together something that looks like a scrapbook and the titles of the people involved in the film. I like how they've made the titles shake as if they are glitches. I think this would be good for our film as it would create suspense and would introduce the doppelganger into the story so that the audience doesn't get confused later on in the film. We could instead of making just the text glitch, we could also make some of the transitions have this effect as well to keep the scene consistent. I also like how the text is on a plain black background with white writing as this makes the writing stand out more from the background because of the high contract between the shades.

The Ward:
I chose this title to look at because of the simplicity of the title font and background. They have used a plain black background and white writing. This is effective because the writing contrasts against the background so that the title stands out. The font also gives us inspiration for what font we would like to use because it isn't complex but it is still different to classic fonts. I think this would be a good font to use for our product as it has a slight sinister look to it but it's subtle.

Ideas for Our Titles:
I think for our titles, we want to keep the font and colour scheme simple like the examples above. This is because horror films don't need complex titles to appear scary. Because our film doesn't involve a lot of violence, titles like 'Insidious' wouldn't be appropriate because it would give the audience the wrong impression on what to expect in the film.
We will create tension with our titles by using effects like a pulse or glitch effect. This type of distortion gives the impression that the film has a uneasy tone throughout as the titles will be shown at the start.
We will possibly use a font similar to 'The Ward' titles because it looks quite Gothic which is typical in the horror genre as it connotes darkness and horror. We want to use a font that has pointed corners on the letters as the connotes sharp weapons such as daggers or swords
By combining a simple colour scheme, glitch effects and a Gothic font, we hope to be able to create titles that link to our film as well as creating tension effectively.
